Skyfall: Bond returns to the Gentleman’s Club [Spoilers]

Went to see the new Bond yesterday.  I’m not going to review it properly because I’m no good at that but there is something that really irked me about the film.  Unfortunately, it happens at the end, so only follow the jump if you’ve seen it/don’t care.

At the end of the film, Judi Dench’s M has died, with Daniel Craig holding her like she’s his mother.  As the last scene of the film, we see James Bond walking into the new M’s office with the female field agent with whom he’s been working through parts of the film.  She tells him as they enter the secretary’s office that she has decided to give up on being a field agent (as suggested by Bond earlier) so is now going to be the new M’s secretary.  She introduces herself as Eve Munnpypenny (or however you spell it) and sits down at her new desk.  Bond then goes through into the new M’s office -it is Ralph Fiennes.  The minimal, glass and granite stylings of Dench’s M office are gone, replaced by dark wood pannelling, brown leather chairs and I even think cigars are involved…

And there you have it.  We have moved from a Bond world in which the highest authority is held by a woman, a strong female figure to one in which the MI6 is run again by the old boy network from a room in which you wouldn’t be surprised to find Bertie Wooster.  The men are back in charge and the women are secretaries again.  Thank God for that.
